Styal Reserves--Report@ Week 1 of the season
Daten Res 1 Styal Res 0
Styal Res 1 Middlewich Res 0
Golbourne Res 1 Styal Res 5
Poch and Loz took their new look reserve side to Daten’s superb pitch on a glorious August day only to go down 1-0 in a contest that gave the management team a lot of food for thought for the season. A couple of outstanding saves from new skipper Osbourne kept it at 1-0 and at the other end Styal saw plenty of the ball but with little cutting edge. There were plenty of positives but with only 2 players from last season’s final game starting, and some new faces clearly needing fitness and games, styal lacked the knowhow and tempo to really grab this opener and come away with something.
Tuesday saw a change in personnel in the midfield with Marney and Tom Curle buzzing around the impressive Joe Cooper Matt West came into the attack too alongside Sefu and Zak. Middlewich will no doubt be in the top 4/5 come May and as always put a young fit side out who broke with pace and always looked a threat. With the experienced Cowley behind a back four of Sam Dunford.Paul Staniland, Luke May,.Livo, early shakes quickly vanished and an impressive clean sheet was to follow. The only goal of the game came following a penalty for hand ball, Sefu stepped up to take it, 1st team manager Zekky turned to Loz and said “Sefu has never missed a pen”. Sefu promptly missed. Fortunately Phil Livingston picked up the rebound and gave Styal their 1st 3 points of the season. Superb effort and tempo throughout and notable performances from Joe Cooper in the middle of the park and rejuvenated Matt West up top.
Saturday, and Styal were back on their travels this time to last year’s champions, Golbourne. Loz Newman came in at left back for Livo and debutant Grant Spencer filled the hole left by Marney who stepped up to the 1sts. Ozzy was back in goal and Adkin came in upfront for Zak. Styal looked comfortable throughout and ran out 5-1 winners despite being pegged back to 1-1 just after half time. A thoroughly deserved hatrick from Sefu was added to by the superb Grant Spencer and a rare but outstanding luke may goal. Some lovely passing football from Styal really sets the bar for the season. Mentions to Paul Adkin who was unlucky not to cap one of his best performances with a goal and of course to Sefu who’s work rate leading the line was outstanding. Matt West again showed a great return to form and Sam Dunford at right back is proving a solid addition to the reserves.
