Styal 'A' battled hard to win the points against Broadheath. With the game 1-1 at half time, Styal stepped it up in the second half and created numerous chances. Broadheath were always a threat when they played high balls into the Styal box.

Tom Perry pulled off a brilliant penalty save in the Styal goal and had an excellent game. There were numerous other performances of note with Darren Fluery and Tom Grindell on the right hand side particularly effective. Matt Cook kept his head converting 2 penalties in the second half;although it was a mystery why they had been given as on both occassions the ball had already ended up in the Broadheath net.

Swinton 2 Styal ‘A’ 1

The game started with both teams moving the ball around quickly and Swinton’s young side looking sharp upfront. However Styal were quickly a threat and despite a changed team the installation of Steve Boardman into the middle of the park helped Matt Cook and Tom Grindell to get forward from midfield. The movement of Darren Fluery and Tom Allen upfront caused the Swinton defence some issues and created space.

It was Swinton who struck first when a cross from their right arrived to their centre forward who finished past Nick Wright in Styal’s goal. There was then a period of chances at either end; Matt Cook had a couple of good shots at the Swinton goal and the Swinton keeper pulled off what finally proved to be some vital saves. In amongst all the action Styal equalised when Tom Allen was upended in the box and Cook fired the penalty home.

The second half saw chance at either end in the early stages but the vital goal came midway through the half when a Swinton forward got in behind Styal’s back line and fired right footed past Wright. Although Styal never gave in it was Swinton who dominated the later stages of the game.

Styal 'A' didn't do enough to overcome Unicorn despite taking a 2-0 lead with 2 Adkin goals inside the first 30 minutes. Styal never looked assured at the back and conceded from a free kick 5 miutes before half time when no one dealt with the cross. The second half started badly as Unicorn scored 2 quick carbon copy goals all free kicks delivered into the box from the same place. Styal always looked dangerouis from the right hand side with Lee Broome giving Unicorn's defenders plenty to think about and they carved out a series of chances with Unicorn's keeper pulling off some good saves. With 20 minutes to go Manifold flicked the ball on for Tom Grindell to get past Unicorn's back line and fire the ball in for an equaliser. Styal piled the pressure on to the end with the best chance falling to Adkin late on when his first touch let him down.

Styal 'A' got a well deserved result reflecting their recent improvement. Despite a good first half Sale's aerial threat accounted for their 2 goals against Styal's well taken Steve Manifold effort. Styal stepped their game up in the second half defending resolutely and Manifold and Sim Cook upfront gave the midfield options through their good movement and interplay. matt Cook popped an early equaliser in to level things at 2-2 and then Gareth Metcalfe, Sim Cook and Ben Bland took things to 5-2 with some quality goals, all with good build up play by the team. Lee Broome had a fine game at right full back and the width of Ben Bland and Gareth Metcalfe stretched Sale's midfield and Styal enjoyed more space as the game went on. Good performance by stand in keeper Nick Wright also.

Styal 'A' had no complaints as they were beaten by the better team on saturday as they exited the cup; the difference between the 2 divisions was apparent. However, there was no disgrace in defeat and a similar performance against teams in their own league will see them starting to accumulate league points.
