Mon 11th April Sale Town Res 4 Styal 'A' 1
Apr 12, 2011, 5:38 pm

Styal couldnt make it through to the cup final after a poor first half performance left them too much to do in a second half that they dominated.

Sale were quicker to the ball, sharper in the tackle and more determined from the off and when they managed to pull Styal's defenders around or pressure Styal on the ball they were rewarded with chances and 2 early goals within 20 minutes started them off well. Styal made chances themselves but there was no killer instinct when it was required and a 3rd sloppy goal from Styal's perspective just before half time didnt help matters.

The second half started immediately with a Sale goal and just as quickly Tom Allen headed in for Styal to pull it back to 4-1. Styal never stopped working. Littler and Cummings battled hard upfront and Metcalfe, Fluery and Twentyman all grafted and as the game went on became more influentual around the Sale box. Styal had enough chances to pull things back, the woodwork saving Sale and some solid defending when it was required.

Tues 5th April Northenden Vics 3 Styal 'A' 3 (Styal win 4-3 on pens)
Apr 6, 2011, 5:12 pm

Styal looked to have thrown away a good opportunity playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half when they came off 3-1 down. Northenden opened the scoring; Tom Allen equalised for Styal midway through the half and Northenden scored twice before the break from the only chances they had. Styal had a hatful of chances that went begging.

Just before the end of the half, a reckless challenge by a Northenden player saw Sam Jackson carried off and Northenden down to 10 men. Styal regrouped and used the man advantage well in the second half with first Chris Littler and then the influential Tom Cummings bringing the teams level. The stage was then set for Styal's Matt Purvis to pull off a number of fine saves as Northenden had a last 10 minute flurry on the Styal goal and it was fitting the Purvis saved Northendens 4th spot kick during the penalty shootout to seal Styal's passage to the semi final stage.

Styal stuck manfully at the job and hopefully a good performance against the other semi finalist (from Sale Town or Ashton Park) who meet tonight will see a chance of silverware for the club

Styal ‘A’ 2 Ashton Park 0

A wonder save from Nick Bazeley in the first minute kept Ashton Park out and Lee Taylor, Stu Davis stayed resolute for the rest of the game in the heart of Styal’s defence to get Styal a second clean sheet this season. The first half was an even affair but Styal took the lead on 30 mins with their best goal this season. Styal’s right side passed the ball around then Little put David Tapia-Owens free on the right. Tom Allen launched himself at the inch perfect cross with a diving header into the roof of the net finishing a fine team goal.

Styal stood firm in the second half and made numerous chances; the Ashton Park keeper saving a number well. Styal’s second goal deflated the visitors. Although not as beautiful as the first, Lee Taylor’s powerful goalward header was backheaded past the stranded keeper by the involuntary reflex actions of Sim Cook. However it was another deserved goal.

Styal 'A' 0 Cornishman 2

Styal defended resolutely in the first half with Cornishman well on top and went in 1-0 down at the break. The second half was  different story with Styal upping their game and creating a series of good chances; the final touch was lacking however when it was needed. The game was over when Cornishman scored a breakaway 2nd goal with 3 minutes left to finish Styal's gallant efforts.

Styal 'A' didn't impose themselves on the opposition during the first half and struggled to muster any attempts on goal despite a stiff breeze at their backs. With their passing loose and no-one playing with any conviction it was atypical loose midfield pass that put their own defence on the back foot and Broadheath capitalised shooting the opener past stand in keeper Jackson. The second half was better and the introduction of Twentyman and Allen saw some forays down the wings on both sides. However, there was still no meaningful shots on goal and as the game went on with Styal pushing it was always likely the Braodheath would finish the game off with a breakaway goal. Exactly what happened with 10 monutes to go.
